Arduino Gas Leak Detection System (Summer 2025)

System Overview / Hardware

  • Arduino Uno as main controller

  • MQ-5 gas sensor for combustible gas detection

  • LED and buzzer for alert outputs

  • Powered via USB with optional battery support

Project Description

An embedded safety monitoring system developed using an Arduino Uno and MQ-5 gas sensor to detect the presence of LPG, methane, hydrogen, and natural gas. The system continuously monitors gas concentration and provides immediate visual and audible alerts through an LED and buzzer.

Inputs & Outputs

Inputs:

  • MQ-5 gas sensor (digital threshold output for gas presence)

  • Power input via Arduino Uno USB or external battery

Outputs:

  • LED indicator for visual gas detection alert

  • Buzzer for audible warning when gas is detected

  • Serial Monitor output for real-time sensor readings and debugging

Gas Detected

No Gas Detected

Results

  • Reliable detection of LPG, methane and natural gas

  • Clear alert behavior during gas exposure (LED + Buzzer)

  • Stable baseline operation with no unintended alerts

  • Consistent Serial Monitor feedback confirming system state

Solution Methods

  • Adjusted threshold to balance sensitivity and reduce false positives

  • Verified behavior through Serial Monitor output and physical alerts

  • Independently tested LED and buzzer before full system integration
